Braided Apple Pie (Print Version)

# Ingredients:

→ Filling

01 - 2 Tbsp unsalted butter
02 - 2½ pounds of apples, sliced, peeled, and with cores removed (~4-5 large ones)
03 - ½ cup white sugar
04 - ¼ cup brown packed sugar
05 - 1 tsp cinnamon (ground)
06 - ¼ tsp ginger powder
07 - ½ tsp ground allspice
08 - ¼ tsp salt
09 - 2 Tbsp plain flour
10 - 2 Tbsp cornstarch
11 - 1 Tbsp lemon juice (freshly squeezed)

→ Dough and Topping

12 - 1 box (14.1 ounces) of pre-made pie dough (2 sheets)
13 - 1 beaten egg mixed with 1 Tbsp water
14 - 2 Tbsp turbinado or sanding sugar
15 - Vanilla ice cream for serving

# Instructions:

01 - In a large pan, melt butter and cook apples with sugars and spices until softened. Mix flour with cornstarch, stir it in, and cook till thick. Add lemon juice at the end and let everything cool completely.
02 - Stack the pie crusts, then roll them into a rectangle about 11 by 18 inches. Pour the cooled apple mix on top and spread it out evenly.
03 - Roll the pastry into a log shape, slice it lengthwise, then twist the halves together with the cut sides facing up.
04 - Brush the dough with the egg mixture, sprinkle sugar over the top, and bake at 375°F for 18-20 minutes until golden and crispy.

# Notes:

01 - Top apple types: Honeycrisp, Granny Smith, Braeburn, or Jonagold.
02 - Mixing apples makes better flavor combos.
